Interesting thought John - but that's more lateral thinking. I had understood that there was a meteorological explanation. Several other interesting theories and facts have surfaced around this question. Regards Russell John wrote... Tidal currents would affect boat speed, depending on heading relatve to set of current. Since I'm only getting into sail theory, this might sound rash. Doesn't boat speed factor strongly into apparent wind, so tidal current could make you feel wind differently??
