    Re: which would you choose?

If I had to choose just one, it would depend on circumstances.
For a lifeboat or short-haul sailing, I would choose the GPS.

If I was going to be out at sea long enough for there to be a
significant chance of electronic failure, then sextant.

If I had a $1000 budget, I would probably get:

    1) Sextant. (Otherwise, I wouldn't be reading this list.) You can get
one for < $500 new (if you get the Astra) or used.

    2) Portable GPS ($200). Store it with batteries removed in a waterproof
box in a safe place. Use it for emergencies (like when you find yourself
doubting your skill with the sextant, or when things are moving too
fast to do sight reductions, or when weather prevents you from
       taking sights.)

    3) Programmable calculator for doing sight reductions (~$50-$100). Don't
       forget the manual.

    4) Cheap solar-powered calculator as backup for above.

    5) Charts (obviously).

    6) Almanac

    7) Sight reduction tables as backup for calculators & for practice.

    8) At least two compasses (cheap) as backups for the boat's compass.

If you still have $$ left over, get a 2nd GPS. Batteries removed,
hermetically sealed, stored in a secure place in the lifeboat.
