    Re: using old nautical almanacs
    From: George Huxtable
    Date: 2009 Mar 11, 09:05 -0000

In [7619] I had written, in error-

"Bill may find it of interest to see how our Gregorian Calendar adjusts to
cater for that figure of 365.7422, by throwing in an occasional leap year
    day, or sometimes omitting it."

which Bill questioned. He is right. In typing the number of days in a year
as 365.7422 rather than 365.2422 as it should be, I had struck a wrong note
on the keyboard. Sorry about that.

I'm a fellow who seems to commit many such errors; a consequence of sending
many postings, and not checking the details carefully enough. I will try to
do better, but these things slip through. It's a special problem because
such errors get archived, and someone reads them, years on, and takes them
    for gospel truth.

It would be nice if a mailing list such as ours offered a way to draw
attention to an acknowledged mistake, after it has appeared. Not to allow a
posting to be amended after the event, which could be dangerous tinkering
with history, and never-ending. Instead, to allow the original contributor
(and nobody else) to retrospectively add a tag which means, in effect- "the
writer of this posting asks you to read it in context with later message
number [xxxx] which will modify it in some way". I fear that I would use it
    often.

    George.
