Dear Wolfgang,
For timing sights when you do not use a wrist chronometer:-
You can always save yourself spending money on a stopwatch, and use a time-honoured method of taking the sight and going with the sextant clasped in hand down into cabin and navigation /chart table where the chronometer is:
whilst counting: one-and-two-and-three-and-four-and-five ....etc.
It is surprisingly accurate; quite enough so within in a minute or two period to be within a second or two, which in practical navigation is more than adequate.
Or, 'old' mechanical stopwatches are now fairly cheap to obtain (if you can find one mind you) as everyone has bought super-duper LCD ones now with electronics for timing for sport purposes.
