Logs on any and all merchant ship's I have sailed on all use sonic waves to
measure speed through the water. The really advanced ones can tell you
lateral bow and stern speed as well as speed through the water. Most of
the ones I have sailed with are way out of calibration, like on my current ship,
and are generally ignored. I will put it on the shipyard list, but I am
fairly certain it will be cut. I have seen one taffrail log in my
school, but never in use.
