Brian Tunstall, "Admiral Byng and the loss of Minorca", London 1928, p. 7,
    says:

"The Hon. John Byng was the fourth son of Sir George Byng, Lord Torrington,
victor in the famous action off Cape Passaro in 1718."

That seems to be the answer to your question. I admit that I have not
checked "original documents" like the birth register nor had DNA tests made
on their mortal remains. I am one of the people that put trust in secondary
sources as long as they have a reputation and record in their field and
document their sources (unlike Dava Sobel).

Was Sir George Byng that you mentioned related to Admiral John Byng
who was court martialled and executed in 1757?
