George- Were micrometers at all available in their time? Could htey simply have used a small micrometer to measure the exact scale reading, literally by placing it alongside the scale instead of using an eyeball judgement? This could be a simple logic of economics, i.e. buying a "stock" small micrometer rather than a more expensive and complex sextant of a design which perhaps had not been made?
