My ship is on the USN distribution list and we received our copy of the
2009 Almanac in the first half of 2008, although I cannot recall the exact
month. We are way down the list, so I would say that there should be
plenty of time to get a copy of the NA before any long deployments.

Satellites are wonderful things. I have exchanged email via
commercial sats (Inmarsat & Iridium) and even amateur HF radio (there
are commercial HF systems as well.) I am quite sure the Navy has their own
systems which i know nothing about. It sure makes keeping in touch with
home much easier.
