Personally the lack of a periscope, given the ability of electronics to fail (or be caused to fail) at the worst possible moment would scare me. It is reassuring to know they won't be flying blind (at least on the surface) in case of high-tech problems. Which reminds me of the report regarding US war planes on their way somewhere when they crossed the dateline (if I recall the circumstances), and most systems shut down. Darn near flying blind. Just a software problem...a line of code here or there.
