Thanks to Alex for helping me to locate the volume on mechanical instruments by Frederick W Simms. I've ordered it up at the library, but haven't seen it yet. I had been looking at the wrong Simms; William, who wrote the book on the sextant that I referred to. Alex asked how many pages that had. Can't remember precisely, but it's a slim volume, about 100 pages at a guess. Looking at Fred Simms' other publications, he is clearly a mining engineer, and maybe his instruments have a mining connection. In which case, perhaps it's possible that to him, a dipmeter might be a device for measuring the dip of an underground seam, rather than a device to measure the anhedral angle between two opposite horizons. Just a thought. George. ================================================================ contact George Huxtable by email at george@huxtable.u-net.com, by phone at 01865 820222 (from outside UK, +44 1865 820222), or by mail at 1 Sandy Lane, Southmoor, Abingdon, Oxon OX13 5HX, UK. ================================================================
