Re: recommendation for slide rule ?

    Greg:

Given that the K&E 4080 is an ordinary 10" slide rule, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed.   These standard engineer's slide rules were good for two digits of accuracy.  Even assuming you could carry that much accuracy through the standard trig formulae for Hc, you'd still be looking at an error of almost a degree!    Not very good if one is trying for minute accuracy.

Won a K&E 4080-3 on ebay and anxiously awaiting to receive it.
I'm hoping that it is in good condition as described but you can never
tell until the item is in hand. It will be interesting to compare
solution times between the slide rule and pub 249. One advantage of
the slide rule over pub.249 is that the dead reckoning position can be
    used as the assumed position.

    Thanks for your advice.

Here is a link where you can download the manual for the K&E 4080http://www.mccoys-kecatalogs.com/KEManuals/4080-3_1948/4080-3_1948.htm

    No advantage with two sliderules.

Don't be intimidated by all the scales on these rules, most are LogLog
scales that have no connection with celnav calculations. The important
scales are simply the D, S, and ST scale for small angles.

    Gary,

It does appear as you have illustrated that the K&E 4080 has
multiple advantages over the Pickett. Are there benefits to working
with two slide rules together so that products can be transfered from
one to the other and back again? If so then what types pair best?

I like the K&E better than the Pickett because the S scale is adjacent
to the D scale and the markings are more legible. Compare the yellow
Pickett with the white K&E and also see my previous post.

    Gary,

You have succeeded in getting me interested in slide rules. I
have never owned or used one but after some internet research I see
that they have been to the moon and back. Now I will have to get one!
So far I am leaning toward the purchase of a Pickett N3-ES which is of
aluminum construction. The slide rule could very well be the pinnacle
of low tech achievement. Right there with the mechanical chronometer.

I like the K&E 4080 because the trig scales are marked in degrees and
minutes so use the same units as other methods of celnav. The 4081 is
almost identical except the scales are marked in degrees and tenths of
    degrees. Take your pick.
PS. they are things of beauty.

Awhile back some pdf files were posted containing a bygrave
type computer.  I believe it was the original poster did a
comparison using his keuffel and esser 4080 slide rule against
the bygrave and perhaps a calculator.

Now I am interested in trying a slide rule.  It would seem that
ebay has the most to offer and I have checked prices for
the one mentioned above.   At this time I am only interested in
using the slide rule for sight reduction.

Being rather ignorant of slide rules I would appreciate if there are
other models that the list would recommend giving me a few
    more options before purchase.

    Thank you.
