Alex, On some models, the illumination system for the bubble unit cannot be activated until the wind up mechanism is fully engaged. At least that is the case with my MK IX A. Try winding the mechanism all the way. Don't trigger it unless you reckon you can get a good shot in under two minutes. Failing that, there may be some corrosion in the light socket. Try a squirt of WD-40. My two bits' worth.
