When did you see that? They are currently selling the 2012 edition on their own web page for 14.95. I can't imagine that they would have sold it for less earlier this year. But it makes perfect sense if they, or dealers with overstock, now start remaindering it before it becomes worthless after Nov 1st. (Of course it is despicable if these old copies end up being offered to the unwary as 2013 almanacs.)

 

Having said that, there is no way figuring out what goes on in the mind of book dealers. The 2012 Skyhorse edition of the N.A. is currently eligible for trade in at Amazon. That means, if you are done sailing for this season, send them your almanac (they pay the shipping) and get a $2.00 credit. Is the value of paper for recycling that high?

 

Where the profits of Skyhorse are concerned, missing in your calculation are the proceeds from their Kindle edition. Not that they must amount to much: Having an almanac in the Kindle is an incredibly clumsy idea. The tables are apparently scanned in as images and thus hard to read and navigate. The reviews accordingly all give 1 star (the minimum). Why anybody would want an image of a paper version of an almanac stored in an electronic device when the same data is available in machine readable form is totally beyond me.

You are right, we have plenty of stock.

An interesting aspect is that Skyhorse listed the book for $12.  They sell it to Amazon at 60% off, or $4.80. Then they pay royalties of $2.52 per copy to the Brits. That leaves a profit of $2.28 and they haven't yet paid to print it!  On that score alone, I don't think we will see a 2013 edition.

Separately, I was talking to the Chief of the US Naval Observatory a month ago, and casually asked him what he thought of Skyhorse using their name on a book.  He said they didn't like it and are taking steps to prevent it happening again.

I would be surprised to see a 2013 edition from them.

This would be the usual Commercial Edition, , right?soft covered, with a few pages of ads front and rear I take it?

Best price I can recall seeing, especially if the seller actually has the things.
