Try doing the boat speed through the water using a slide rule. Set the D scale to the boat factor and the C scale to the long count (seconds). Read off the knots on the D scale under 1 of C scale. The linked photo shows a K&E 4080-3 set up for a 33 ft. boat factor of 20 divided by a 4 second long count and getting a result of 5 kts.

Example for 33ft. sloop:
- Boat length in nautical miles = 33/6076 = .00543
- 3600 seconds in an hour.
.00543/ long count = Kts. / 3600
19.6 / long count = Kts.
Round 19.6 up to 20 to get an easy to remember boat factor number.
