Very interesting. Randy's results are right in line with the results four of us got on five-day offshore navigation cruise in the eastern Caribbean in January 2010. Sextant was a brand new Davis Mark 15. It was right out of the box, never used, and we found it had one-degree index error, which adjusted out so we were routinely dealing with one to five minutes.

Our champ was our shipmate from Switzerland, Benno Good, who came in with a 0.1' intercept from the sun. So here's a tip o' the hat to Randy.

    Randy,

Worked up your eight observations and got the following intercepts from your home position of observation:

    0.6 away
    0.0
    0.7 toward
    0.4 toward
    1.2 toward
    0.4 away
    0.6 away
    0.8 toward
    1.1 away

This set of intercepts will produce a pin wheel on a standard plotting sheet where the width of a sharp pencil is 0.5 nautical miles. Well done ! Darn good for a Davis sextant. It must be a new one. Don't play with the adjustment screws too much if you can help it.

I'll work up a pair of plots for you so that you can see how the pub 229 reduction looks vs. a calculator reduction.

The perfect shot was Sirius. Can't do any better than that :)
