Re: misunderstandings: was Automatic deviation calculation by electronic compasses
    From: George Huxtable
    Date: 2009 Dec 11, 17:20 -0000

Joel Jacobs, in [11086] seems intent on picking an argument with me where
    none exists.

I'll try to clear up a few misunderstandings.

    Joel wrote, addressing Lu-
"Like you, when I read George Huxtable's post, NavList 11066, I thought he
was opposed to covering topics outside the core of "Traditional Navigation".
However, if you take the time to dissect each sentence, it is possible that
he may not be opposed to discussing new technology at all."

[11066] was not my post. It came from Lu. In it, he quoted these words of
    mine-

"Does our group deliberately restrict itself to "traditional navigation",
whatever that may be? I would hate to think so... But we happily deal,
sometimes at length, with other applications of modern technology; and why
    not, indeed?"

How could Joel read those words, and think that I was opposed to covering
topics outside the core of "Traditional Navigation"? I was arguing exactly
the opposite; that we should take a broad view of our topic, including its
    modern aspects.

    Then he added-
"The problem is that in this post, like in many of George H's posts, he is
like the economists who are always on both sides of a forecast with their
but's and if's so they can always claim they had it right."

This list would be a more pleasant place if members avoided such personal
comments, and kept to discussion of navigational facts.

Next, Joel wrote- "For example, he had me confused by saying in the same
post "I'm not complaining, only making an observation" ...

No wonder Joel was confused. Those were NOT my words. They were Frank Reed's
words, in [11059], in which he wrote, about modern magnetic sensor
    technology-
"despite being technically off-topic for our traditional navigation group
(not a complaint, merely an observation)". It was those words that I was
arguing AGAINST! I hope, when Joel has read my own posting, in [11061], he
will come back and tell us if he has revised his view, that I was arguing
    both ways.

    The personal slurring continues with-
"when he is attempting to be snarky, and too cleaver by half, I get lost."

As for Joel's previous comment in [11068], which I really couldn't follow,
it seems that he was complaining that I had left the "Sir" out of "Sir
William Thomson". Well, everyone, sorry about that.

I would much rather be discussing navigational matters, instead of this sort
    of stuff.

    George.
