    How's this reasoning:
An 'on the arc' (negative) correction is easier to read since it is read
straight off the micrometer drum. An 'off the arc' error would be calculated
by reading the drum and taking the 60' complement - for example: An error of
2' on the arc will be read as 2' when the instrument is being checked and
the error has been noted. An error of 2' off the arc will be 58' (
    equivalent to -2').
    correct??

I've never seen this discussed anywhere, but I can think of two
reasons to prefer a negative sextant index correction rather than a
positive IC. Can anyone figure out what those reasons might be?
