In a way a small I.E can be likened to compass deviation. When adjusting a 2? Dev. may be as well to leave it because you will end up chasing your tail in an effort to reduce it. If you leave at 2? you know what you have when applying. Back to sextants, one should always test for I.E before taking altitude. Easier done on a large ship than a small yacht where the horizon is bobbing up and down. Checking for IE is especially important if more than one person is using the same sextant as the other people may have missused and this should always be assumed.
