Most of them are rarely worn at all. They sit in a drawer, or within the sextant case, so I guess temperature is the variable. As to what kind, they vary; some mechanical, most quartz, none very expensive. The best all-rounder is a cheap Casio. I prefer an analogue display, but this one's digital (numbers) display is an advantage when making time sights.
