He had done a lot of reading of old documents, and there is much stuff there you won't find elsewhere. However, I think that in much of it he was quite out of his depth in understanding what was going on. As a result, the book is riddled with errors. Jan Kalivoda and I, with some help from Herbert Prinz, have put together a list of known and suspected errors, comprising several pages of text. I think it would help any owner of Cotter's book to print it out, slip it between the pages, and mark the dodgy passages. I am by no means confident that we have caught them all, and if anyone discovers or suspects further errors, or thinks we have been mistaken about any we report, I request to be informed.
