I think the long shelf life of this is because it is in Bowditch! Take a look at http://www.i-DEADLINK-com/bowditch/pdf/chapt26.pdf Article 2611 - Latitude Determination as part of the chapter on Emergency Navigation. It states: "The length of the day varies with latitude. Hence, latitude can be determined if the elapsed time between sunrise and sunset can be accurately observed."
