    Byron,

Hurricane Sandy did bring back memories of the one time I got caught in the eye of a Typhoon aboard the fleet oiler USNS Passumpsic (1989).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Passumpsic_(AO-107)

The typhoon had passed from the Philippine Sea over Luzon to the South China Sea losing much of it's energy but still remaining a typhoon. The Passumpsic had evacuated Olongapo (Subic Bay) ahead of the typhoon but one of our crew got knocked down on deck by a wave breaking his ribs. The ship came about to return to port only to pass directly through the eye. Seas and swells were not bad because Luzon provided a lee for us but winds were still around 90 kts. Strong enough to blow the EPIRB out of it's holder. Good thing I spotted it rolling on deck or there would have been a full search and rescue initiated. The typhoon wall produced blinding rain so intense that it seemed more like a water fall. Somewhere in my scrap book I have saved the barograph which showed the pressure dipping straight down and popping back up. The fast moving typhoon was long gone by the time we returned to Subic Bay and the injured crewman was safely put ashore for medical treatment.

    Greg Rudzinski
