George, I think you take all of this much too seriously. Such books ARE created for the giving season, ARE made up by committees (under careful guidance from the Marketing department) and live or die through their gorgeous images. Who reads any more? Indeed, as you have pointed out, such a heavy book is impractical to read.
And you expect an index? And mathematical formulae? And no errors? Surely you are pulling our leg. I normally read your posts with great interest and often go away better informed, but this time I gave up well before the end.
Too much huff and puff about a book that was never really (despite its brave assertions) meant to be taken as seriously as you have done.
