Byron: In the past the Navy ships pretty well each had
the CO's orders written from the orders of the higher
COMNAVSURFORINST, but maybe tailored by the mission
of the ship. Much of the early ships that I was first on, had little
money old equipment and knowledge.
That is why I developed the Franklin Piloting technique.
The liberty Hull had the a 2WW gyros that move around as you
turned sped up and even went straight. (USS OUTPOST)
These ships were underway most of the year as on station
Radar Pickets, We tracked any incoming radar pip and reported
the pip if it was not scheduled, a US. Plane would intercept.
We had Loran A and sextant for navigation. Sun lines all day and stars morning
and night for months at a time. That was my job, as well we were a weather ship
making weather reports to the beach.
