For what it's worth, if anyone is interested, there is a fairly good Wikipedia article on the specific details of the grounding:

It was a shocking error in near-shore navigation and piloting: in clear weather with excellent visibility, fishing grounds buoys on the shoal were mistaken for USN "acoustic range buoys" in the channel. In the ensuing court martial, the captain chose to plead guilty, and his naval career was effectively ended.
