Alan,
I found volume 3 in a used bookstore for cheap. If I bought volumes 2 and 4 I would have every latitude I have ever sailed in covered. Add volume 1 because the southern Caribbean is a dream. Those four volumes used: about $50. Together they take up about the same space and weight as half a case of beer. Not a big deal.
Best,
Patrick

Re use of H.O. 229 for sight reduction, one can certainly do that, though the six volumes, if one obtained all six are real space burners, to say nothing of their cost. Of course they are available for free on-line, though the on-line versions of such tables seem to me to be much less convenient to use than are printed tables.
