Re use of H.O. 229 for sight reduction, one can certainly do that, though the six volumes, if one obtained all six are real space burners, to say nothing of their cost. Of course they are available for free on-line, though the on-line versions of such tables seem to me to be much less convenient to use than are printed tables. How does one make margin notes looking at a computer screen? Shades of a cartoon I saw many years ago, on the subject of computer aided drafting/design, entitled Agi Cad, but that's another story. By the way, the U.S.C.G requires demonstrated "proffiency" in sight reduction using 229 for licensing of ships officers, as I understand.
Given however, that 229 requires messing about with "assumed positions", sight reduction using the Law of Cosines in conjunction with the Daily Pages of the NA seems simpler, and more direct, this being my take only.. Of course, there is nothing wrong with being conversant with multiple methods of solving any given problem, the more, the merrier being perhaps appropriate..
