Hello Murray. On the handle there are 2 plastic finger nuts.Losen these and
take them off the bolts that attaches to the frame.Split the handle and open
it.This is the battery compartment. There should be another set of nuts on
the posts.Tighten these and if this fixes the problem put it back
together. If it doesn't fix the problem wiggle the 2 bolts going into the
frame. If one or both are lose you will have to take the index mirror off of
the top one to tighten.Try not to do this because once the index mirror is
taken off the frame you may have to go through many adjustments that also
    involve repositioning the horizon mirror.
As for the horizon glass slideing around perhaps the 3 tension springs or
screws need tightening. Is it a split or whole horizon glass?Either way it
must be corrected and error taken out.
This may be an easy fix or a whole can of worms for you.I would be very
upset with the shipping company or the shipper for not packageing it
properly or handleing it to roughly.I'd be talking to the insurance carrier
or shipper 1st.Did you have shiping insurance on the sextant?Did the sextant
    come with it's wooden box?
Hope this helps and write if more questions pop up.You may also want to
invest in "The Sextant Handbook" as I understand it is full of tips.
    Doug
