There were indeed teams of geodets during WWII. My father was one of those men. He served in Brazil, mapping the tributaries of the Amazon River in a dugout canoe for the first part of his duty. His replacement was killed by headhunters about a week after my father was transferred. He spent the rest of the war in Saudi Arabia mapping the desert. I have many pictures of him with the natives of Brazil and the royal family in Saudi Arabia. He is almost 94 now, and still talks about his experiences. The geodets actually put together a book about their experiences. You are correct in saying that the geodet program was small, but those that served still refer to themselves as geodets.
