George, Thank you for the info. It mostly confirmed the impression I had: that someone proposed the micrometer reading in XVIII century, and that Heath is somehow involved. (The info about Heath comes from their own brochure, and on XVIII century from some paper on the early sextants which I downloaded on "Sextants" list). Alex. > Alex asked, a few days ago, which firm was the first to introduce the drum > sextant, to supersede the Vernier scale.
