Great circle. For example, Muslims here in the San Francisco Bay area face northeast when praying. I've never been able to find an answer to, though, is what direction one faces (or whether it matters) when one is at the antipodal point to Mecca (ie, the one directly opposite it on the globe) -- at that place every direction points to Mecca.
