I thought I read a few years ago about this question concerning astronauts and religious leaders said it was more important to pray than to worry about the direction.

Deep in the archives there should be an old posting of mine, in which I
speculated about the existence of an anti-Mecca, on the other side of the
World, where an obelisk would be set up and the Faithful could gather round,
but all facing radially away from it.
Unfortunately, it's a fantasy, because the antipode of Mecca is in the
Ocean, not on land.
