    "ded" versus "dead" reckoning

    Purely as an etymology matter, which one came first? Is there evidence for the "deduced"-->"ded"-->"dead" theory? Or is this what linguists call a "folk etymology", something that sounds like such a nice explanation that it becomes a popular theory without evidence? Either way is a plausible hypothesis.
