I did write about the Scar Gear on 602 above Navlist6074, The type 11 periscope is in various papers that can be read by any one. So I can say that it was needed for azimuth, we would not use it for Navigation. Never even tried. we sometimes used surface navigation when transiting
and not SINS, I wrote about one time heading North of Scotland near the Hebrides using radar and Loran and DR. I should have picked the Hebrides
up on radar so I got a 3 point PINWHEEL on Loran the charted DR. said no.
We were far to the east by loran. I did trust my DR. over loran. We held on to course and speed, another loran fix agreed with the first. Them the lookouts called out the Hebrides ahead. This is where the surface experence and the DR. proved itself. The ETS would have came around on the first fix?
