    Frank:

    This year the Transpacific Yacht Club instituted an award for boats
    sailing their biennial race from San Pedro to Honolulu using only
    celestial navigation. They had one boat who used celestial and it was
    awarded their new Rudiger trophy for their work. The trophy was for
    navigators who chose to demonstrate their skills with traditional nav
    methods. It was different from the one in Bermuda. They were not solely
    using celestial.

    The trophy is named for well known Transpac navigator Mark Rudiger who
    died a couple of years ago. It consists of a traditional sextant.

    As to the observation that weather is important, George Griffith once
    told me that there was one pre-electronic navigation TransPac where they
    never saw the sun for the entire 2200 mile trip. So it was all dead
    reckoning! Two weeks of it!

    Jim Wilson
