I was able to use my Davis artificial horizon with shades in place in combination with a 30x40mm telescope to view the transit. The telescope has a small tripod attached which put the objective lens about 1/4 inch from the shade on the AH. The view was clear, although not very sharp. I'm guessing due to the water. Visibility was spotty, due to clouds.
I was able to get a much sharper, although smaller view through my Davis Mk 15 with 3x telescope. My fiance and two good friends shared the experience. Awesome!
