Dear Alexander, there is an ocean of publications on astrolabes, one of the best and most concise being a booklet called "The Planispheric Astrolabe" issued by the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich (may be out of print, but is re-issued regularly). The National Maritime Museum (www.nmm.ac.uk) also sells a kit to make your own planispheric astrolabe for 2,50 pounds which is very neat and contains explanations of the basic principles. Regards, W.
