    Re: accurate sextant

    Dear Sara and Dan

I second Alex's views about Russian sextants, having had the
opportunity to examine, overhaul and calibrate both the ones he
mentions. I think the SNO-T(sometimes designated SNO-T) is probably
the best nautical sextant ever made. Mechanically, it is sound and the
optics, by Zeiss, are superb. The SNO-M is not quite so easy to use
for the beginner as it has only one telescope, a x6 that gives on
inverted image, but it is somewhat cheaper than the the SNO-T. The
telescope is the same as the SNO-T's, which also has a Galilean 3 x
    42. Both may still be had for well under US$400 on e-bay.
