The standard edition of Cook's Journals must now be that of J C Beaglehole, published by the Hakluyt Society between 1955 and 1967 in four fat volumes. It is long out of print and very costly second-hand, but many large libraries will have a copy.
Beaglehole does the work of assessing lunars for us by inserting footnotes giving the modern positions of places when Cook's journal entry gives a position fixed by lunars or "the watch".
