    Is there some means where by one can determine Zn of the Sun, at sun set, given only the date and the latitude/longitude of position.

    I recon you could do it very easily with Amplitude Tables (around pages 556 to 557 in Nories.  The explanation is with the tables).  All you need to enter is latitude and declination (a function of date), so good for use in lifeboats.  The technique was used for a dawn and dusk check of the compass.  If the attached slide comes out, it’s on there too.  DaveP
