The Pasha Bulker, for such is the name of this ill-fated 40,000 tonne
bulk coal carrier, remains firmly wedged on Nobbys Beach at Newcastle,
although I don't think anyone underestimates the difficulties involved
in dragging it off there. The most powerful tugs in the land, from
Sydney and Melbourne, have arrived and are now standing by as
operations continue. Although the hull has been partially breached it
is hoped the inner hull is unaffected. Another gale has been forecast
for this weekend. So far it is just raining.

This sorry episode has added a new phase to the language, donated by
the surfing and youth culture of Newcastle. 'Doing a Pasha' means just
landing somewhere unexpectedly and hanging out, despite being clearly
uninvited and unwelcome. Being an awkward guest, difficult to get rid
    of.
