    Hi Tom

    Its actually quite valid to take an observation without a scope.   It is easier to see the objects/features you are after.

    A scope will magnify the objects and features, permitting more accurate observations, for example: brushing limbs in a sun / moon lunar.

    There is one other thing to note!  This was an attempt to sell war bonds, consequently, it is better to see the navigator's face, something not well portrayed with a scope pressed up to one's eye!
