I note many learned members have given or pointed to very technical explanations for the error - all of which are very relevant. I am surprised that nobody questioned the accuracy of a hand held GPS as the initial source of error. (It maybe only be part of the total error - but still very relevant). For more accurate GPS positioning, a differential signal is generally used. I doubt very much that your Nuvi is capable of utilising differential GPS - or am I way behind the times?
