    Randall,

    Good going ! A few more things to try. Since Jupiter is a small disc in the 7 power scope it will be necessary to split the disc with the limb of the Moon. For tonight with the two bodies low in the western sky try holding the sextant by the frame using the fingers of the left hand leaving the right hand free to operate the micrometer. Have the left elbow resting on a table directly under the sextant. This will help reduce fatigue. You may find after some more practice that averaging will become redundant and that one good observation gets it done. Remember that lunar distances change very slowly so there is no need to hurry these observations.
