Windows program to reduce sights....
From: Michael Dorl
Date: 2004 Jan 6, 14:39 -0600
After a bit of floundering around, I've managed to navigate MS Windows and Visual Studio and make a application to reduce a set of sights.
A brief description of the program and how to get it follows.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who gives it a test drive.
best wishes for a great 2004, Mike

SIGHTS is a Windows application that reduces a set of astronomical observations and determines where the observer could be located.
SIGHTS can be downloaded from http://ns.doit.wisc.edu/~mdorl
This application was written to gain some understanding of the MS Windows environment and Visual C++. It was developed under Windows 98 and MS Visual Studio C++ version 6.0.
The actual operation of the program from the user?s perspective is documented in the help file. If the HELP button under the HELP menu is not operative, you can view the SIGHTS.HLP files by double clicking on it.
I started with the POPPAD editor from Charles Petzold's 'Programming Windows' Fifth Edition. I recommend this book highly to anyone wanting to write Windows programs. I modified POPPAD by adding multiple windows, splitter bars, help, a popup World Map window, and various supporting features. Most of my changes to POPPAD are in SIGHTS.C but some small changes are scattered about in other POPPAD modules. Modules SIGHTS_REDUCE.CPP and SIGHTS_WORLD_MAP.CPP are completely mine and contain the stuff to reduce the sights and draw the world map. Mr Petzold tells me I'm free to distribute his code provided the copyright notice remains in place. Credits to other sources used are included in ?About SIGHTS? under the HELP menu item.
The distribution contains several ZIP files.
APP.ZIP contains SIGHTS.EXE, SIGHTS.HLP, SIGHTS.CNT, COASTLINES.DAT, and OBSERVATIONS.TXT (a sample input file). These files should all go in a single directory. COASTLINES_FULL.DAT is available for anyone wanting a more detailed map; just retrieve it and rename it to COASTLINES.DAT.
DEVEL.ZIP contains the actual C files needed to build SIGHTS.
If you redistribute the program or source, please give credit to Mr. Petzold and myself and leave the copyright notices in the HELP ABOUT menu and the source code in place.
Finally, I?d like to hear any feedback or comments you have about the program or any changes you make to it.
