Re: Why do we ocean navigators defer to 249 when 229 is better?

Pub 249 is designed for the bubble octant aboard an aircraft and rounds Hc to the minute and Z to the degree. Pub 229 is designed for the marine sextant aboard a ship where there is ample room for the 6 volumes.

There are many ways to perform sight reduction so I think it is only fair to compare methods by catagory.

    Inspection Tables (214,229,249)

Short Tables (208,211, Weems, Trig Log)

Dividing methods into groups using DR assumed position or an assumed position of convenience might also be done.
