    Why I Like Celestial Navigation
    From: Dan Allen

In the spirit of George's excellent mini-bio about his being an ex-
physicist, I would like to add that I grew up in Silicon Valley,
specifically, Sunnyvale, California. I had a neighbor that took me
sailing once for the day on Monterey Bay. I was hooked on the sea.
As I began asking questions about navigation, he showed me his copy
of Bowditch, the blue 1966 edition. That opened a world to me, when
I was about 10 years old, that I have ever since wanted to explore
    and understand.
In college I majored in physics, but ended up studying math and
numerical analysis. I then went on to work for Apple Computer and
Microsoft for many years writing software. I finally got a boat and
actually planned a world trip. It did not end up happening, but in
that period of time (late 1990s, early 2000s) I finally bought many
sextants and got seriously interested in using celestial navigation
    for our proposed world trip.
When the world trip fizzled I sold that boat and bought another but
since then we have taken up as an alternate adventure living on a
ranch in the Wild West. No more boats. My diminished frequency of
postings to this group has been a result of my being nowhere near an
Someday I hope to move back to a coastal region and get another boat
and then my interest will flourish once again. In the meantime,
however, I do enjoy learning from many on this list about all things
