The biography in Bowditch's translation of Laplace is often considered
something more like a tribute than a factual account of the man's life. Easily
half of what you will read about Bowditch is legend, including exggerated tales
about the significance of his contribution to the American Practical Navigator.
Berry's "Yankee Stargazer" is widely regarded the best biography of Bowditch the
man, and Campbell's "Bibliography of the American Practical Navigator...",
despite its flaws, is the best biography of Bowditch the book.
