    Tony,

          The Pol() function converts 2 dimensional coordinates (x,y) into polar form; r = sqrt(x^2+y^2). It's the length of the straight line from the origin to the point (x,y). θ is the angle that line makes with the x-axis. It's not the great circle distance but could use it compute an middle latitude rhumbline distance

    d = Pol( Dlat, Dlon *Cos(Mlat) )

    where Dlat (Dlon) is the difference in latitudes(longitudes) and Mlat is the average of the initial and final latitudes,
