Thank you for your quick response. Your advice to consult an older text is first rate. By coincidence, I received a ex library book from Portsmouth England today which nearly fills the bill. It is "The Elements of Astronomy for Surveyors" originally by Sir Robert Chapman published in 1918. I say originally because it has been highly revised by J. B. Mackie. The programs for an HP67 (which I foolishly gave up years ago) were a dead give a way. I then located a PDF of the original which I will enjoy reading even more. One hundred years ago, the author felt it necessary to make a case for the earth being a sphere, more or less. He also observed that part of the problem of refraction was not knowing the depth of the atmosphere. That was little more than thirty years before my birth. We have come far in a short time! Again, I am grateful for your advice, especially because you are civil engineer. I have found the surveying community to be very close about their techniques when talking with amateurs.
